Fr. Bob's Corner June 5, 2022

Happy Pentecost Sunday!  As the summer is upon us and we begin to wrap up the Season of Easter, we are given this great solemnity to remind us of the gift of the Holy Spirit our Lord gave to the Apostles and to us.

In our Gospel this weekend, Jesus appears to His disciples after He has risen from the dead and shows them His hands and His feet. He has already given so much to and for them.  He has sacrificed Himself on the altar of the cross, beaten, bruised, ridiculed, and pierced. He rose to conquer death and so to allow us the possibility of entering into eternal life.  Jesus shows his closest friends these marks first - to show them they have already received so much from Him. What is there left to give?

Our Lord then gives the rest of Him - His very breath.  The breath that was given to Him by the Father. Think about your own parents for a second - you owe them your life. The very ability to breathe comes from your parents. So, too, is it with the Christ.  He has given all that He had on the Cross and now He gives to the disciples and to us what had been given to Him by the Father - His breath. He gives to us this beautiful life-giving relationship between the Father and the Son.  This relationship between the Father and the Son is the deepest love we can ever know. And that is what we celebrate this weekend - that our Lord, on Pentecost, gives us not only His Body and Blood, but also the love He shares with the Father. He gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit permits us to participate in this Divine relationship of the Father and the Son while on earth, which points us towards where we belong; where the Head and Shepherd leads us.

We can find this Divine love between us and our families. We participate in it when we give all of ourselves to our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers. May we, as a parish family, give all that we have to one another, and be a grateful family of faith to our God who gives everything He has to us.

May the Lord give you His peace,

Fr. Bob
