Fr. Bob's Corner - April 3, 2022

In the narrative of the Gospels, Jesus is often seen going to and from Jerusalem.  He is a faithful Jewish man and was required by the Jewish faith to travel to Jerusalem at least 3 times a year for the 3 main feasts in the Jewish year.  His whole earthly life, really, His mission, was to go to Jerusalem.  Time and again He tells the disciples “I must go to Jerusalem and be put to death” (Matt. 16:21) and time and again they do not believe Him and worse yet, they refuse to believe He will do that - go to Jerusalem to be put to death.  Jesus’ response to Peter, “Get behind me Satan” (Matt. 16:23) shows how little His disciples knew about His mission.

Every Lenten season we journey towards Jerusalem with our Lord.  We pray the stations of the Cross so we can share in the Redemptive Suffering of Jesus.  Year after year, as faithful Catholics, when we participate in this Season, we travel to Jerusalem.  And while it might be fun to put up the festive Easter decorations and have the kids go on egg hunts and put PEEPS in the microwave for a few seconds (which I highly recommend), the journey is THROUGH the CROSS.  ‘No one can come to the Father except through Me.’ (John 14:6)  Christ’s mission is our mission as well through the Cross - to lay down our lives; to suffer; for our family and friends.  Especially hard in a world that sees suffering as something to be avoided at all costs.  But it is our MISSION.  We must go up to Jerusalem.  That is our focus this week.

May the Lord give you His Peace,

Father Bob
