Fr. Bob's Corner - November 28, 2021

Happy first Sunday of Advent!  It is a beautiful time of year with all of the lights and the trees but it is fundamentally a preparation for our souls and those of our family for the coming of Jesus into the world.  We do this year after year because it makes us stop and slow down and focus on what is important to us.

The lights and the trees and the spirit of the season focuses us on important things - the love of our family, being together, and the overall warmth of the season in the middle of cold winter.  All of these things are good things and should point us towards the deeper importance of Christmas.  It should point us towards the larger family we belong to - the Church.  It should bring us together in prayer with the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.  It should point us to the fact of the Son of Man, the Light of the world, is coming to us in the darkness of weakness and sin.

God always chooses to use the things of this world to bring us closer to Him.  He reveals His greatness through nature and through these special seasons that He gives to us.  We use this season to remember that He is with us.  Let the lights and songs and joy of the season pervade your homes.  But more importantly, let the Spirit of our Lord, who came for our salvation, pervade our homes and our souls.  I’d like to close this corner with the prayer that is attributed to Saint Patrick, patron saint of the second holiest land on earth (just kidding).  This can be our prayer as we enter into the Advent Season:

I arise today
Through the strength of heaven: Light of the sun, Splendor of fire, Speed of lightning, Swiftness of the wind, Depth of the sea, Stability of the earth, Firmness of the rock.

I arise today
Through God’s strength to pilot me:  God’s might to uphold me, God’s wisdom to guide me, God’s eye to look before me, God’s ear to hear me, God’s word to speak for me, God’s hand to guard me, God’s way to lie before me, God’s shield to protect me, God’s hosts to save me afar and anear, Alone or in a multitude.

Christ shield me today.  Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ on my right, Christ on my left, Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down, Christ in the heart of everyone who thinks of me, Christ in the mouth of everyone who speaks of me, Christ in the eye that sees me, Christ in the ear that hears me.

I arise today
Through the mighty strength of the Lord of Creation.

May the Lord give you His peace,

Fr. Bob
