Fr. Bob's Corner - April 18, 2021

The season of Easter exists so that we can reflect more deeply on the great mystery of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead.  Even the apostles had an incredibly hard time understanding seeing the risen Lord in front of their faces.  It was only when Jesus broke open the Scriptures and breaks the bread with them, do they grasp a part of the depth of the sacrifice and redemption that is now before them.

What is so striking about our Lord is the humility and compassion He has on the apostles.  They are frightened and confused and He simply shows them His hands and His feet.  His wounds - the very wounds that were at the heart of His disgrace before the Israelite people - are now the means by which people will come to believe.

These wounds of our Lord are a lesson for us - the wounds of our life - the moments of disgrace and failure - are the ways in which God brings about redemption in our lives.  When you combine this with the beautiful logic of God’s living Word in the Scriptures and the offer of participating in divine life in the breaking of the bread - this is what makes up our faith.  It is the house built upon rock.

We need this season to pray with these mysteries and let them soak into our souls.  Sacrifice, suffering, and death with Him means life, Resurrection, and joy.  But we just go through the Scriptures and break the bread. “I am the Resurrection and the life.  Whoever believes in me will have eternal life.”  He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.  If we wish to eventually go to the Father in heaven - we must go through His sacred wounds as the apostles did.

May the Lord give you His peace,

Father Bob
