This weekend we celebrate the Baptism of our Lord.  His Baptism was not like the one John the Baptism was performing.  Our Lord was Baptized so that we could see the difference between the two - John the Baptism Baptizing for repentance and Jesus’ was a Baptism in the Holy Spirit, where you hear the words of the Father called you His “Beloved”.

Beloved.  To be loved.  Our Baptism allows us to be loved.  It is the simplest explanation of Baptism - Simply to be loved by God.  Every time we use holy water to bless ourselves - a reminder of that.  Every time we genuflect when we first enter the pew at Mass - a reminder of that.  At our funeral there are white palls and holy water and a paschal candle - all reminders of our Baptism and how much we were loved and how much we will be loved when we see Him face to face.

Baptism is a tough sacrament for us to pray on.  Most of us were infants and have no recollection on it at all.  When we do think of our Baptism, it helps to place ourselves in the Gospel this weekend.  Jesus, getting baptized by John, looking up and seeing the clouds part and hear those wonderful words - “beloved”.

This is a truth about our family of faith - our collective “beloved-ness”.  We are all the beloved of the Father.  Our calling - every one of us - is the share that truth in our soul - that love - with those around us this week.  “By this all people will know that you are my disciples: if you have love for one another”.

May the Lord give you His peace,

Fr. Bob
