Fr. Bob's Corner - November 08, 2020

Posted on November 06, 2020 in: Pastor

One of my favorite memories at my first assignment as a priest was a phone call to the rectory about an hour before the Saturday Vigil Mass. There were two priests at the parish at the time - Father Dooner, the pastor and a great mentor, and myself. I picked up the phone and a parishioner on the other end kindly asked, “Who has the Mass tonight?” I replied, “Father Dooner has the Mass tonight.”  She responded, “That’s great. I can’t stand that young priest.”  To which I responded, kind of laughing, “Yea. Me too.”

A good dose of humility from time to time is a wonderful thing.  It’s a gift from God.  It reminds us that we must decrease and He must increase.  With all that is going on right now in our country and the world - humility is a great virtue to embrace and practice.  It makes our soul thirst for God, as our psalm says this weekend.  The truth is our soul can’t be satisfied by drinking in the things of this world.  “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you”. (Saint Augustine)

God CAN satisfy us.  He can calm our hearts and minds and give us peace.  Humility is necessary for this peace.  We all need it - especially now.  May the Wisdom of God, the Holy Spirit, calm our hearts and point us to the well of everlasting Life.

May the Lord give you His peace,

-Fr. Bob
