Fr. Bob's Corner - May 30, 2021

This weekend, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity - reminding us of the three-fold personhood of God. When we pray, we do not shout into a void of nothingness and hope for an echo that resembles some sort of god. No, we have relationship with the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Being created in the image and likeness of God (Genesis), we are created in this threefold image. We are created to love like the Father, to receive love like the Son, and to share that love with those around us through the Holy Spirit. We cannot just be in the image of one of the persons of the Trinity. We cannot just love others. We need to be able to receive love. We cannot just receive love from others and not give it. That would make us incredibly selfish.

The way in which we can be the best husband or wife, the best son or daughter, the best friend, the best nun, and the best priest - is to first receive the Love that God the Father and God the Son wish to give us. We cannot love another fully until we know first how much we are loved. It is simple - we cannot give what we do not have. We need to be able to receive this Love first. Which is why we celebrate this Solemnity a week after we celebrate Pentecost Sunday - the day where we celebrate the love of the Father and Son entering to the world in the Holy Spirit.

I know a lot of this sounds very theological - and it is. But praying to the Father or to the Son or to the Holy Spirit is very important not just important to our faith, but it also permits us to receive and give love as is proper to each of our different relationships as well. You do not love your husband or wife the same way you do your children. Nor should you. By fine tuning our prayer life and focusing on each relationship that is proper to the three Persons of the Blessed Trinity, living out our faith also means fine tuning the proper relationships we develop with the people around us.

May the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit give you Peace.
