Did you know…Town Bell Given to Church In Trooper - article written-up in a local newspaper.
The bell in the steeple of the Mt. Vernon Christian Center which has been torn down at Umbria and Wright Sts., has found a new home.
It was known as the Old Town Bell of Manayunk and was originally cast in Philadelphia in 1858 and recast for the Mt. Vernon Center, which had to be razed in 1902 because of structural defects in the building.
The bell got the name Old Town Bell when it pealed out news of victories by the Union Army in the Civil War.
The Rev. Thomas D. Olsen, Jr., director of the Mt. Vernon Center, faced with the loss of the building, said he wanted the 700-pound bell to continue to be used to call people to worship.
On Saturday the bell was received from Mr. Olsen by the Tabernacle Society through the agency of the rector of St. Mary’s Church, Manayunk, and moved to its new location on the grounds of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary parish in Trooper.
The rector, the Rev. John Larkin, is in the midst of several major changes and plans to erect the bell for liturgical use on a steel tripod frame.
The bell was cast for the Mr. Vernon Baptist Church, using the material of an older local bell whose memory was retained in the inscription.
A St. Mary’s volunteer loosened the bell from its steeple position and the bell and mechanism were lifted by the crane of the demolition crew and placed on a truck for transferal, a trip which is reminiscent of the ride the Liberty Bell took to Allentown during the Revolutionary War.
Update: We are in the process of having our bell serviced and the ringing mechanism updated. Technology is available to assist in scheduling the ringing of the bells more frequently. I would like to have the bells ringing daily at 6am, noon and 6pm known as the Angelus. The Angelus reminds us of the Angel Gabriel's annunciation to Mary, Mary's Fiat, the Incarnation, and Our Lord's Passion and Resurrection. It is repeated as a holy invitation, calling us to prayer and meditation.
May the Lord give you His peace,
