FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Some Good News & Warm Welcome!: Amid all of the ugly news erupting within our church, I am happy to share with you something good. St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, which prepares our own seminarians as well as those from several other dioceses & religious orders, now has its largest class since the year 2000—both the undergraduate & graduate theology divisions together this year welcomed 176 young men into the formation programs there. For the first time in many years, Visitation BVM is assigned 2 seminarians who will come to us each Thursday during the school year for their Field Education component—which tries to enable a pastoral/practical ministry application to complement their theoretical academic/theological learning & their spiritual formation.
Mr. Erik Reyes is a 1st Theology student with the Raleigh, North Carolina diocese. He is a native of Veracruz, Mexico & moved to NC with his family when he was 10 years old. He recently completed his undergraduate college seminary training in Mexico City, & has come to Philadelphia to complete his graduate theology degree.
Mr. Dominic Winter is also a 1st Theology student with the Lincoln, Nebraska diocese. He completed his undergraduate college seminary in his hometown diocese outside of Lincoln & has a brother who is a priest back home in NE, in a Spanish speaking parish; & likewise this is his first experience of the Philly area.
Fr. Brian and I plan to slowly introduce them to Philly cheese steaks, the famous Norristown ‘Zep’ & our hometown Phillies & Eagles—along with some more weighty things pertaining to parish ministry. The seminarians will assist us as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist at our 8:15 am. Thursday Mass; after which they will spend the rest of their morning teaching in our parish grade school. After lunch, they will assist with home visits to shut-ins as well as occasional hospital visits at Einstein Montgomery before returning to the seminary after sharing the dinner meal with us.
A very warm Visi welcome, Erik & Dominic: May your year here with us be filled with abundant growth & unexpected blessings!
